How To Speed Up Your WordPress

Word Press is a fantastic tool to use for sharing your blogs and allowing people to see what your business is all about. It allows you to provide an insight into your services/products that can be lost when you simply post blogs on various websites. Slow databases are a nightmare and if your queries get backlogged then worst case scenario is that your account may get suspended if you exceed your CPU quota. Not only does this make your frustrated but it also annoys your site visitors who want to read your blogs. The outcome; miserable people all round!

You can improve the loading speed of blogs on shared hosting websites but before you begin to do anything, make sure that you back up all of your Word Press files first.

1) Avoid widgets in your sidebar

Try to use pure code in your sidebar and although this sounds like hard work it is actually very simple. You can find examples of codes by researching and you can use these for tags, posts, categories and many more along your sidebar so you don’t have to use widgets.

2) Only use plug-ins that are necessary

You can get a faster loading speed with the fewer plug-ins you have so get rid of any plug-ins that are not needed for your posts.

3) Get rid of post revisions!

Post revisions are good for building up your database but there is no need to swamp it.

4) Delete extra tables from your Word Press database

Extra tables are those that are not being used by the pug-ins and they should be deleted. Extra tables are created when you install and un-install plug-ins and as this is often done on a regular basis, they extra tables can quickly rack up.

5) Optimise your Word Press DB

Go to your admin page and click on your database to check your tables and then go to the drop down menu and click on ‘repair’. Then click on the database and check all of the table again and when you now go to the drop down menu you can select ‘optimise’.

6) Use HTML instead of PHP wherever possible

Whenever your blog page loads up (so when someone wants to read it) if you have PHP your blog will take longer to load up.  It sends out many requests that simply take time to handle with PHP so it works far quicker and easier if you just change them to static HTML codes instead.

There are a few other steps that you can take to make your Word Press account run faster but these are the basics. Here at the UK SEO Agency we are happy to help you with any of your internet marketing needs. If you would like more information on our services or a personalised quote then please feel free to get in contact.

Wordpress 2.8 Is release

Filed under: WordPress — Tags: — Nathan @ 11:04 pm

Matt Mullig and his team at Wordpress have done another great job - releasing the latest version of wordpress with some great new features. And we will update this blog with more great tips about how we can optimise it for SEO purposes.

However this blog is to give you an overview of why wordpress is such a good tool for you to build a basic free website with, yes that is correct we are giving you a few tips on how to get a Free Search Engine Optimised website!

Wordpress by default is quite well optimised, however you must realise there are a lot of improvement which can be made. The first area of any wordpress I would look at is the URL structure. Out of the box you find it provides you with a querystring based URL, however wordpress has functions which allow you to quickly and easily change the structure. In the (now old) 2.7 version this option is called permalinks, and is under the settings.

One of the next plugins (A wordpress module) I would install would be a Title/Meta Tag optimiser such as the All in one SEO pack, available from the wordpress extension site. At this point it is always prudent to ensure that no duplicate pages crop into the index, and this can be done through carefull modification of your robots.txt file.

After you have done all of this, and it should take no longer than 30 minutes, you can look at styling the website however you like through the many free templates, or maybe pay for a custom one!

If however you would like a professional company to install wordpress for you, We will install and configure a basic wordpress system for you for only £79.99, with installation of any free template from only £14.99.

If you also require hosting - please contact us for our latest pricing, we can have your website up and running on the same day in most cases*

*Bar DNS propogation timescales (6-72 hours typical) and using a prebuilt template
