Since the announcement of the Microsoft- Yahoo partnership, everyone have been buzzing about the news. There were a number of blogs created on the announcement day – Blogs that focused on peoples reactions about the 10 – year deal between Microsoft and the second largest search engine – Yahoo. The integration of the two huge companies is only the primary step of  Microsoft – Yahoo to take some part of the search engine market shares that search engine giant Google has largest shares.

Stiff competition within the search engine industry has held Microsoft back, in achieving first choice rankings. Microsoft entered the web world  by launching MSN search engine which gathered information using from other search engines. However, Google continued to grow their market shares and making Microsoft re-evaluate MSN search engine. With the failure of the MSN search Microsoft continued the battle for the search engine market share by launching Windows Live Search, despite without too much effort Google continued to monopolise the largest market share.  Windows Live Search made no impact on the dominance of Google in the search engine land. Microsoft even tried to re-brand their search engine from Windows Live Search to Live Search.

Whatever tactics Microsoft had, it was not  able to take the dominance over Google within the search engine industry. With Microsoft’s partnership with Yahoo, Microsoft are looking into having a greater chance to have some part of Google’s search engine market shares. Being the second largest search engine Yahoo seems to be Microsoft’s  chance to influence Google’s dominance in search engines.  The Microsoft- Yahoo partnership could somehow be a threat for them not today or in the near future. But there is what we call possibilities.

The Microsoft- Yahoo partnership may pose somehow a threat on them but the great thing about this is that Google will be encourage to improve the efficiency and speed of their services. This will open the doors to a little healthy competition amongst the search engines especially in UK. Google will become even more competitive; and behind the search engine competition search engine users can benefit with efficient,  fast and reliable services. With a combined UK market shares of 4% , the Microsoft – Yahoo partnership will only have a minimal effect on your online marketing.

All About The Search Engines……….

Search engines are a complex thing and describing how they work when it comes to SEO will take much longer than one articles but I want to give you a rough idea on their purpose in order to help you to understand how search engine optimisation works.  Basically, search engines such as Google use different programmes to identify what a web page is offering in order to rank them in the appropriate way. If you imagine that the Internet as a whole is a large book, the search engines are the index at the back of the book that summarise the meaning of the book. If you want to look for a specific term or word in an index it is the same as putting a specific phrase or word into the search engines and to go even further, you can liken the page numbers in a book to the hyperlinks used.

Computer programmes may be intelligent but they do not work in the same way as humans when it comes to indexing. Computer programmes don’t understand the meaning of words but they do understand how to index them where they are programmed to index them to. Google is by far the world leader in the world of search engines and it works by using algorithms that understand that when a website is linking to a different page, it sends out the message that the page that is being linked to is relevant to what keywords and phrases are being used. A link is similar to a vote or a reference as it is giving a web page recognition for what it is offering.

So, search engines don’t yet understand the actual meaning of a word but they do comprehend the types of words and the patterns that appear when it comes to repeat use. This is all about keywords. For example if I wrote: “I love the steaks offered at TGI Fridays” and added a link to TGI Fridays, the search engines would recognise that the phrase I used was related to TGI Friday and that it was relevant to that particular site, even though it would not know what the term actually meant. Taking this one step further you will start to understand the relevance of the other search terms such as ‘steaks offered’ as because they appear in the same phrase as TGI Fridays a search engine will then associate the phrase with the website so if it is repeatedly used in searches, search engines will count these as keywords for the TGI Fridays website.

This is put in much simpler terms than the process actually entails but you should be starting to form more of an idea of how the search engines work. There are many more factors that search engines take into consideration when they are ranking web pages and experts believe there are as many as 50 to 200. Here at the UK SEO agency, we understand the search engines and how to appeal to their spiders to create web pages that rank highly as well as read well., something that many so called SEO specialists don’t take into consideration.

The Bing and Yahoo Partnership And The World Of Search Engines

August 6, 2009

Last July Microsoft announced that Bing will be soon powering search engine results behind Yahoo. Currently, Google is the major player in the search engine industry composing almost 70% of the search engine market. It is a little early since Bing was launched in terms on implementing SEO on your website. With Microsoft’s Bing and Yahoo partnership this may give them almost the rest of the 30% search engine market.

The announcement of Bing – Yahoo partnership gave a huge impact on narrowing the road of search engines. Before, there was only Google but today we already have two major players in search engine field which Google and Bing/ Yahoo. There are other search engine players, although these are not that significant compared to Google and soon to be Bing/ Yahoo. Will this make any difference? Definitely, yes. For you will be adding more effort with your SEO campaigns and content will be king. Your content will make you unique compared to your competitors.

Bing has gained a fairly positive response from critics. If Bing increases their market shares within the search engine environment, then more and more of your clicks may be arriving on your site through Bing. Every search engine is different from one another. Your SEM strategies that worked perfectly with Google may not work as well with Bing. By practising your SEO strategies and continually searching for new techniques that will put you into the top of any search engines is one of the ways that you can cope up with this development in the web 2.0 world. No need to worry if you are exercising proper and proven techniques. Change is constant, and someday you may also say “Just Bing It”.
