User keyword habits

I have spoken about keywords many times but there is simply so much to say about them that there is always more material! User habits should always be taken into account when thinking about keywords and although there are rock solid ways to find out which keywords should be used, there are also a few ways to catch anything that may slip through the net.

Firstly I think it is hugely important to realise that as with everything in the world, nothing stays the same for very long and the habits of Internet users are no exception. Many change their so-called habits as often as Google changes its algorithms and as such it can be hard to work out patterns and habits. As they change they often evolve and become more educated in their searches and this is more often than not simply through learning what works and what doesn’t as well as having to change their ways to meet the evolving space itself.

As search engines and human beings are forever changing their ways, Internet marketing companies are having to keep up and constantly adapt to the new way of working. This affects search engine optimisation and keyword selection in a handful of ways as we are constantly striving to make sure that the keywords that we are implementing for your websites are the correct ones and are therefore the most productive. As the Internet is becoming more and more widely used, many people soon catch on to the idea that if they search for specific terms rather than broad terms that they will get far better results.

Generic keyword searches often produce far more results but the majority of them are useless and irrelevant. Think of your searches like a bag of oranges, there is no point in buying 10 oranges if five are rotten, you are better off simply just purchasing a packet of five. If half of the results mean nothing to a search then use specific terms instead and this rule is becoming far more recognised as the Internet continues to take off.

This means that as the human searchers realise the importance of specific search terms they will use more niche keywords and thus the niche angle of using keywords is far more effective and valuable to your SEO methods. Competitiveness for keywords means that more searches will be utilised for these terms and if you can aim correctly at the keywords you will have less competition and better rankings.

Keyphrases v.s Keywords

There is more to keywords than simply adding them into web pages and expecting them to work. Indeed, a few years ago it was possible to simply add in keywords and phrases pretty flamboyantly but as the world of the Internet grew so did its complexity and keywords and phrases must now be used with more card and attention. With times moving on so quickly, it is no longer possible to work out which words are the most used and relevant and it is more about how to incorporate the target words into a phrase.

A successfully optimised website will combine both keywords and keyphrases with the phrases often created from the keywords. If someone is searching for teak furniture then they are most likely to use the words teak and furniture as their search words and not place these words into quotation marks. However, if they were to put these words into quotation marks then their search term, as a keyphrase rather than keywords,  will be more accurately targeted. By placing the words into quote marks, search engines like Google will provide search results that are really targeted at the keyphrase and not tens of thousands of useless results that you get when you search without the phrase.

It goes without saying that many people who search for any type of product on the Internet will mis-spell or even mis-type things in their search terms. If you can include keywords and phrases that are commonly mis-spelled you will then rank highly on the searches for mis-spelt words as well. Teak will often be spelled teek so optimise for both spellings for the ultimate return in online traffic. This can be done by simply having a few articles in the website about mis-spellings and that way the word teek can be used as a keyword but not so that you look incompetent with your spelling!

Being careful with where you put your keywords and phrases into your website content is also vital as just throwing them in randomly and creating non-sensicle sentences, or even just uninteresting sentences, does not make for an appealing website to the real humans that will visit your website when they have been directed there via your high ranking with the search engines. Websites owners must remember that it is not good enough to simply have a high ranking on a search engine as you will not benefit or keep your high ranking if your website makes no sense when site visitors start to look at your pages.

This is where the UK SEO Agency comes into its own as we can provide you with many Internet marketing services, including SEO, that will help you to create a website that attracts both the search engines for high rankings and customers to maintain and benefit you from those rankings. SEO For Government Based Websites

Many companies and businesses around the world are suffering the economic doom and gloom and as such many are cutting down on their expenditure in a bid to save money. Not utilising an search engine optimisation agency during the hard times to save money makes little sense as what you are actually doing is losing money by not having a working SEO strategy in place but I will save that rant for another time. For now let’s concentrate on who is not allowing their SEO to slip and that is the Government.

Firstly, I know what you are going to ask but yes a Government based website does need to implement SEO just like the rest of us even though they are not vying for business they are simply providing information. They need to reach out to a certain audience and this is where SEO plays its vital part. These techniques can be used for government websites but are also relevant to any information based website including newspapers or universities.

Any Government websites have a few natural advantages like their domain names (.gov is particularly attractive to the search engines), the sites are always large, because they provide a wealth of important information they are link magnets and they will often boast a high PageRank. As well as the head starts, websites such as these also have their own challenges.

Scammers target websites such as these as a Government website has the power to reject or approve something. Some of these may include things like licences, contracts, jobs, permits or grants and scammers will use phrases and words like ‘easy’, ‘free’ and ‘guaranteed’ that make it sound as if you can bypass the due process, which is obviously more appealing than going through the correct channels. It goes without saying the Government will not ‘guarantee’ someone a job or permit or provide ‘free’ mortgages so to protect its integrity as a service it must rank higher than the scamming websites.

The sheer size of Government websites mean that there are often many different levels of information and therefore the keywords and phrases cover a broad range. If there is a department that has many branches then one of the departments may well be in charge of different areas if interest. Within every area of interest there may be sub areas of interest and any one of those may include locally based office. This makes the trail leading to each area of interest a complicated one as it will change all the way along the chain.

With information progressing into maybe five or six levels deep, with different branches at each level, there will be many pages that share the same keywords and search terms. Don’t rely on the person who is searching to be able to follow the relevant links properly meaning that if the pages are bringing up multiple choices the searcher may not realise they are on the wrong page. It is important that the pages are then unSEOed and reSEOed so that the correct results are easier to find.

SEO for a Government based website may be complex but it is rewarding and it is just one of our many skills at the UK SEO agency to be able to apply SEO to any website out there. Get in contact with us for more details.
