There Is More To Social Media Than Just Twitter………

December 1, 2009

We are all beginning to understand that social media has huge potentials in the world of search engine optimisation and there are many ways to use social networking websites to your benefit. I have spoken about a few of the ways you can use the likes of Twitter and Facebook to your advantage but there is far more to social media than Twittering your way to the top of the rankings.

Your PR objectives are important to any company and with social media being extremely flexible; it allows your PR objectives to change and grow at the same time. There are no concrete right and wrong ways to utilise social media channels but it is becoming clear that there are things that you can do to dramatically increase your Internet presence through a few simple actions.

Twitter is a very popular social media channel and without a shadow of a doubt it is the network of the moment with marketing and PR professionals. I am not denying that Twitter is a useful form of social media all I am saying is that there is far more out there and if you are only concentrating on Twitter then you are missing out on many other opportunities. You should look at Twitter as being a small piece of a much larger puzzle as you do not get analytics and you are unable to control the network through Twitter.

The old adage of never putting all of your eggs in one basket is the perfect way to describe what I mean about using Twitter. Instead of dominating network A you want to get to the stage where you dominate all of the networks to the point you are owning and starting your own networks. Don’t strive to simply do well via Twitter; strive to be Twitter!

The most obvious downfall of putting all of your effort into one social median is that social networking sites fall in and out of favour faster than you can ever imagine and although it seems highly improbable right now; Twitter may soon be a thing of the past taking your SEO hard work with it. Your PR work within social media will become far easier when your company becomes referential. You need people to notice your brand and recognise it with ease and this can be done by concentrating your efforts throughout the whole social media world and not just through one window. People will then start to talk about your brand and discussions and blogs will then be generated from there and so on.

See out the quiet times by continuing to push on with your efforts. Competitors will come and go and the trick is to outlast them but being consistent and spreading your social media wings as far and as wide as possible. Delete With Care!

November 22, 2009

Posting blogs and creating content needs to be handled with care as we all know by now. Updating the content in your blogs should also be done on a regular basis but simply deleting older post can be damaging and should be done with care. If you have created a whole block of posts then you certainly don’t want to delete them all at once.

Slowly delete one or two posts, depending on how many you have in total on the website, and replace them with new posts as you go along. If you simply delete all of your posts you run the risk of people visiting your website and not finding anything to read. Even if the posts are slightly old or need refreshing, hurriedly deleting everything is not beneficial.

If you have done your search engine optimisation properly then you will have at least some backlinks pointing back to some of the posts. If you ten delete the post that has back links this causes confusion for Google (and other search engines) as they begin to stumble upon ‘error’ messages when they attempt to crawl your website.

Deleting posts does not have a long lasting effect but it will take time for he search engines to rank your site again and this is another good reason why deleting all of your posts at once is a bad idea. You are likely to slip back down the rankings that you have worked so hard to get up. Google will start to re-rank your website but it will take time so the less you play around with posts that boast backlinks the better.

An alternative to simply deleting posts is to use a new domain name and start from the beginning again. Search engines do not always see drastic changes in a topic on a domain name so for example if you have been posting blogs about pet care on a domain for 12 months then deleting everything you created and writing about hotels on the same domain name does not work well at all. And just for a little extra insight this is a point that is well worth considering if you are purchasing an existing domain.

Deleting one or two posts and replacing them is the key to getting it right. Basically as long as the structure of your website stays the same, it will not affect your ranking status. Another important thing to watch out for is not creating backlinks to blogs that are no longer there as this is frustrating to website visitors and Google as it is like waving a red flag at the search engines that screams that you are not taking proper care of your website.
