Buying a domain? Watch out for these pitfalls…

If you are looking to invest in domains there are a few things you should know and the domain name sector is perhaps the most unstable place to be on the internet. Although the whole space is still relatively new and the internet is improving and changing on a regular basis, the domain name part of the online world is certainly the most fluctuating and unruly place to be. Take a look at these hints and tips on what to watch out for…

First of all, did you know that one of the most expensive domain names fetched an estimated $12.5m? Not only that but can you guess what the name was or whatever-popular and lucrative sector it represented? Sex.com of course as any good business person known; sex sells. And only last year in the midst of a worldwide recession, Toy ‘R’ Us paid out a whopping $5.1m on the toys.com domain name. So much for businesses flailing last year! Business.com went for $7.5m and Wine.com for $3m, proving that there is money out there to be spent on a domain name that is apparently worth spending millions on. The trick is to know what is worth the bucks and what is not.

At all costs you should avoid hand registering thousands of cheap and useless domains. Investing in domain names is not about quantity it is about quality. You have to pay fees every year to register domain names so if you have thousands you wil pay thousands whereas if you have a lump sum spare to spend on investments make a few big ones rather than loads of small ones. Your registration costs every year will drop dramatically and yo are likely to have invested better in a domain worth more than loads that are worth pittance.

It is now beyond the pint worth investing in the four-letter domain names. At first, investing in a domain name that has four letters and is easy to pronounce made sense as remembering something easy to say out loud is the sign of a good name. However, now that seemingly all of the easy-to-pronounce domain names have been registered, you are only left with ridiculous sounding four-letter names such as RFYJ.com. Say it out loud then compare it to bebo.com or wado.com and you will soon see what I mean.

Buying lots of cheap domain names that are still worthy can be best done at auction sites. The trick is to sell to end users for 10-120 times more than you paid by explaining to dubious end users why the name is valuable. It takes some patience as end users wil ask lots of questions and test your patience but if you can make a huge profit then it is worth answering their questions and enjoying the outcome.

There are many more things to take into account when investing in domain names and here at the UK SEO Agency we offer a range of services that include search engine optimisation and web design. We can help you to increase your web presence as well as help you with domain names so contact us now if you wish to learn more.

Part 2 - On Site Search Engine Optimisation

In the last post I talked about off site SEO and now I am going to talk a little about on site SEO. As with off site techniques, on site SEO literally means what its name implies; a technique that works from your own website that increases your rankings through well applied search engine optimisation. There are numerous techniques and I will just cover a few of these and as with a lot of SEO; the online community all differ with their opinions on what works and what doesn’t.

Content is key

Using content on a website that is rich in keywords is the most basic yet arguably the most effective technique to apply. When identifying your keywords you must ask yourself a handful of questions:

1) What are searcher’s going to type into a search engine to find my product/service/article/blog etc?

2) How do I really want the searcher’s to find my website through a search engine?

3) If I was searching for my offerings then what would I type into a search engine?

4) What keywords are similar websites using successfully? i.e. what websites that I am competing with rank highly in the results pages.

This will help you to determine which words are your ‘keywords’. How yo then apply these keywords is the trickiest part to get right.

Where to place keywords

1) Page titles and post titles should always include keywords.

2) They should also be included in bold for the tags at least once.

3) The URL of a website should also include the keywords.

4) Outbound links should be keyword rich.

5) Image alt tags should include keywords.

6) Heading tags should be keyword rich although there is much speculation about where and how. H1, H2, H3 and H4 tags will all have an impact and keywords should be included in these.

7) Scattered throughout the text of your post/blog/article/ etc and especially in the opening sentence.

Keywords should also be used in meta tags.

Niche topics

Themed websites that hold unique content are often highly ranked as there is little competition. If your website theme is fairly general then write blogs and articles that are aimed at a unique theme under a separate heading in your website.

Website design

A well designed website is a key factor in how easy it is to navigate and how appealing it is to both search engines and human beings. If it is well coded and well structured with little Flash, Java Script or Frames and you are careful to keep it updated with no links then your website will be a success.

Domain names

Choosing a good domain name is also an important part of on site SEO and there are a few things to bear in mind when choosing a name. Include a keyword or two if possible and research to see if the domain name has been used before and avoid it if it has.

There are many more on site techniques and these are just a few of the most obvious. For more information on Internet marketing contact us here at the UK SEO Agency for more information on how we can benefit your business.

Brand Building Domain Name vs. Disposable Domain Name

Choosing a good domain name is one of the essentials of successful search engine optimisation. Having a domain related to your website is the best choice if you want to rank well to particular keyword or phrase. But how can you choose a good domain for your website that is SEO friendly when almost all the domain names that are related to your website that you can think of are already taken. But don’t worry you can still choose a domain name for your website that is SEO friendly and will help you in building your brand. It is important that you determine whether your domain name is permanent or disposable before you do your domain name brainstorming.

Having a permanent domain name is vital in your brand- building efforts. If you choose a permanent domain name you should choose something that can be easily remembered, credible- sounding and distinctive. However, disposable domain names are domains name that are usually called seasonal or usually used in making money online using affiliate marketing. Brand building considerations are not necessary with disposable domain names. Best example of disposable domain name is lose-weight-now.com, you probably you won’t be having it for a long period of time. A credible- sounding domain name is more likely to get linked to on social media sites. And site domain that is easy to remember will give you the benefit of increased number of visitors returning to your site and the advantages of word of mouth.

Whether you are creating a site for an affiliate marketing campaign or for a long- term business that needs brand building, you still need to think about a perfect site domain that will help you achieve your online business success. Prior to brainstorming your great site domain name you should determine first your objectives in having a website then determine if you will have a permanent or disposable domain name.
