How your blogs can be improved…

Search engine optimisation - Improve your blogging techniques by avoiding the common potholes.

If you are constantly creating blogs and rarely seeing any site visitors then you are doing something wrong. There are millions of blogs out there and the majority of them are growing dust as we speak and normally for the same reasons. If you are unaware of why your blog is not gaining a readership let me put it simply for you; it sucks! The majority of blogs really do, they are dull, unimaginative and simply boring, which means no one in their right mind would want to read it.

The most common problem is that your blog is boring. Write about subjects that interest your readers to gain readers and make sure you entertain, educate and engage your readers, otherwise they will simply log out never to be seen again. Your blogs should always be unique, even if they follow the same subject as other blogs (which would be nigh on impossible to avoid) your blog should read differently.

At all costs avoid using music in the background of your blog as everyone’s tastes differ so half the people who log in will log straight back out if they hear sounds they don’t like and the rest will by annoyed that music just blared out of their computer in the office while they are supposed to be working. Music is also distracting when you are trying to read…

Try not to talk about yourself too much. There is nothing more generic than reading about people’s tastes and experiences so get over yourself and talk about something interesting. Many blogs are not set out into categories so people visiting your blog site will be unable to search for a topic that interests them and instead they will get irritated if they have to scroll though numerous pages of uninteresting blogs before possibly finding one they want to read. By that point, many people would have simply left to find a site with categories and even the simplest platforms allow you to put your blogs into different categories.

To many blogs are also full of punctuation mistakes and spelling atrocities, which makes them hard to read and quite frankly irritating. Typos speak volumes about your blog and they scream that you don’t care about what you have written and if you don’t care, why would your readers? Find a niche and get into it instead of randomly babbling about everything and anything and above all else, ensure that you post regularly and continuously. If your readers expect a new post on a Tuesday make sure there is a post on a Tuesday.

How to use tags to benefit your website

Tags can be hugely important to the success of a website with many overlooking the potential of using tags in their blogs and throughout their website. I am going to take you through a few reasons why including tags can help your website move on to bigger and better things!

Acknowledging that tags are useful is the easy part; understanding how to use them is the tricky bit as there are many right and wrong ways to use tags and over use and under use are two of the biggest pitfalls. When you create a website or a blog site there are a few ways that you can set it out. Subject or category are the most obvious choices but you can also arrange it by date with days, moths and years creating the most used groups. Tagging is also a choice and this can be done with descriptions or notes about what is in the blog post or web page.

Now we have established your choices you will soon see that all of the above options have their own problems as far as duplicate content is concerned. If you create a blog post that appears on one page it will then also appear on the date page, the category page or the year page as  well as the month/year page etc etc. The biggest problem with this is that it disrupts the search engines as they have to figure out how they list the pages on their SERPs.

There are a few things you can do if you choose to tag your blog or website. Firstly, block the date archives so that they cannot be indexed then the search engines will no longer attempt to rank these pages in the SERPs but they can continue past them to other pages that do need ranking. You can also only show limited parts of a blog on certain pages and make the reader go to just one page to read the whole post.

If you have a website that is all about cooking tips (for example) then you will need to use categories with tags. So, if your categories are ‘Must Have Ingredients’, ‘Recipes’, ‘Cooking Utensils’ etc you can then create tags for each category so every time you mention a word that keeps appearing such as sugar you tag it. This means that whenever the word sugar is mentioned in a post it is tagged and this helps your readers to find what they are looking for. Maintaining tags is important as keeping them all updated is also important. You should ensure that tags are not widely spread around the same topic. i.e. cruise, cruising, cruises or sun, sunny and sunning.

Control Your Traffic Loss

It seems that everyone wants to be the next best blogger and I keep meeting people who tell me how they are it! The blogging world’s answer in the quest to find the ultimate blogging expert yet many of these simply fall flat on their faces after just a few attempts. The new and determined blogger starts a blog with hopes to entice a huge readership and hitting the big time and what is the first thing that they do? Choose a domain name after hours of deliberation, spends hours upon hours looking at other premium blogs for ideas and then of course they have to install every plug in possible……So what’s the problem? Too much thinking and not enough focus.

Blogging does not have to be technical and putting too much thought into it and using flashy gizmos does not help you to become a great blogger. You must decide what your niche is, and believe me you really need a niche, and then knuckle down and create blogs aimed at your target audience. Obsessing over the design of the blog and all the others ins and outs can be done later, if at all, and all you need to do to get started is have a goal and get focused on delivering the goods.

If you want to generate traffic and keep it there then there are a few things you can do. Deciding on who your target audience is, is the key to your success. Who are you writing to? What do they want to read about? Why? Blogging is similar to starting  a fire as you throw something into the fire and watch it catch alight or burn out; depending on how others react to what you have written. It is similar to starting off a conversation with your readers and offer them content that interests them as well as stirs up emotions. Wandering off track with your focus will result in a loss of readership and controlling your traffic loss is all about keeping your readers entertained. Before you choose your domain name you have to know who you want to connect with and what they want from you.

Forget about fancy plug ins at this point as well as all of the planning activities and things that do little more than simply waste our time and get focused on your content. Then you have to stick to it! Jumping from one amazing idea to the next just because people don’t flock in their droves within the first five minutes is not a good way to start. Successful blogging, just as with search engine optimisation as a whole, take time so create the content, then tweak it then give it some time.

SEO is a complicated business which is why it is essential that you let a professional Internet marketing company employ an SEO strategy for you. Here at the UK SEO Agency we will provide you with a personalised quote to cater specifically to your needs; however small or big the project.
