The Top Five Blogging Fallacies (Part Two)

December 10, 2009

In my last post I covered the first three of my top five blogging fallacies and in this post I will complete my list. In the first part of my list I talked about how you should not assume that fellow bloggers will always lend a helping hand as some will think of you as competition and others will consider you simply unworthy of their help. Of course there are many that will help but my point was simply that you should not assume that everyone will.

I also talked about how what you are blogging about is more important than how you write it. Blogs are unique in the fact that they don’t require a high level of wording as they are in place to evoke feelings and responses rather than inform like a book or newspaper would. Lastly, I spoke about how promotion of a blog is hugely important and that it is simply not good enough to assume that just because you write a blog it does not mean that everyone will read it.

I will finish my list and go into my last two points in my top five blogging fallacies:

4. Blogging is easy

Just because you don’t have to write with long and arduous words it does not mean that blogging is easy. Firstly, finding the spare time to blog can be tricky for many, especially those who work full time or have families at home. If you are short of time and write rushed blogs it will be painfully obvious in your posts, which will lead to a lack of readership through discontentment about what you have created or sheer boredom. You have to be consistent with the level, quality and substance of your blogging as well as subject matters. You cannot simply post at random as your readers will be more inclined to value your blogs if they know when you will be placing new ones on the website.

5. Money will come in from blogging straight away

This is a slightly grey area as some will claim that money will only start to be made from blogs after you have established a readership but others will claim that there Times supplement piece will have a following without much effort and therefore money will come in straight away. Money often comes in from advertising and advertising can be done before you establish a readership or after but it is far more likely that you will only gain money from advertising after you have established your readership.  Nine times out of ten, people won’t want to pay out for advertising on a blogging space that has yet to prove its worth.

Blogging is a unique way to communicate with people from all over the world from all walks of life and it is an important part of SEO. Knowing and understanding some of the misconceptions is a great way to get started as you will be under no illusions when it comes to what you can expect from your blogs.

Designing A Good Blog

November 1, 2009

Blogs play a huge part in any good search engine optimisation strategy and designing a good one makes all the difference to whether or not it will be successful. Keeping it simple is often a good way of attracting web traffic to read a blog as messy web pages do nothing except divert and confuse the eye. To get some ideas on which designs work well you are best off visiting various websites to see which sites attract you and which don’t.

Write down some pointers and tips and create a ‘use’ and ‘avoid’ list and fill them with all of the particulars that you liked and disliked and apply these to your design. Look into the use of colour, text, font and titles and think about the background. The background to a blog is perhaps the first thing that draws you or pushes you away from a page and a lot of thought should be out into it. Make it relevant to the website or the particular post and if you wish to make it a little complex then include a border between the blog and the background to make the obvious separation.

The background needs to be separated from the blog but the edges of the border can be played with as well. If the blog appears ion a website related to children then you can use a playful edging that is maybe uneven and wavy. The headline of a blog needs to be catchy and this should be done with a title that is straight to the point and it can use a play on words or humor to catch the attention of the reader. Put the headline in bold and make the size of the font larger than the rest of the text and include a short sub-heading underneath the title that explains what the piece is about.

A website that is easy to navigate is crucial for any good website and blogs are no different. Make it easy to find the blogging section by labeling it clearly and simply on the Home Page. Once your visitors reach the blog section make sure that they can get from blog to blog with ease and it is good to have different search options where the blogs can be broken down by dates or keyword searches. The easier your blogs are to find and view the more attractive it will be to use.

Depending on what your website offers will depend on who will be interested in looking at it and using  content that appeals directly to your target audience, you will increase your chances of being successful. Sounds obvious right? Well it may well be an blatant observation to make but using rubbish content is one of the most commonly used mistakes in the world of professional search engine optimisation.

Here at the UK SEO Agency, we can help you to understand the importance of well written content in your quest to reach the dizzy heights of the search engine rankings. Not only can we apply all of the techniques that are needed for a successful SEO strategy but we are happy to inform you as a client on the tricks of the trade as well. By educating our clients, you will not only comprehend what we are doing for your money but why we are doing it and that helps to ease the pressure of the marketing side of your business.

If you understand why we are doing what we do you can relax and let us work our magic for your website and believe me, when I tell you that content is an important part of good SEO, I can’t seem to stress enough that it really is.

Too many people believe that the content needn’t be well written and that as long as the keywords and links are filtered in that as it is only the search engines that are grading your status, text does not have to read particularly well. This is a bad mis-representation of uneducated cowboys trying to implement SEO as for starters, what happens when traffic flows through your site and they get there and the content is quite honestly just crap? They come straight back out of it and look for something else before they  blog about how much gobble-de-gook is on your website and put other people off visiting.

Getting to know your target audience is all about thinking like a customer. Consider what information would you like to read about if you were looking for your product/service and fill your site with facts, tutorials, figures, reviews etc and make it easy to navigate with a site map. Get outside of your cocoon and think outside of your makeshift box by making your content unique. Laughter is infectious and everyone enjoys a smile so include some humour to your content.

A list of key content ingredients:

Event calendar, prizes and giveaways, product reviews both positive and damning, blogs, forums, news groups, question and answer section, interesting, well written and relevant articles, no copied text and finally be creative and try to make your content unique and niche.

Site visitors enjoy having a voice and with blogs and forums your customers can make a connection with your site which in turn will make them trust what you are offering. If your content reads well, is up to date, interesting, funny yet informative and overall pleasant to look at you are on the path to a successful website.
