Possible Causes Of A Websites Traffic Drop

You may have exerted a lot of time and effort on your search engine optimisation campaign, a lot of website owners who decide to do their SEO in-house spend a lot of resources doing so. However what if one day you have found out that your website traffic suddenly dropped and you got any clue as why? Such can be a very frustrating situation, thinking about the time and effort that you have exerted.

From time to time you may find that your website’s traffic may drop slightly, this can be down to various reasons.  which may be caused due to the situations you often neglect. For instance you may be focused on other important matters on your search campaigns. Technical issues within your website may be another reason for the dropping of your website traffic statistics.  Factors or problems within your website are easier to fix and these are the things that you should often keep an eye on.

Google is very strict when implementing their search guidelines; if your site does not abide or follow their guidelines then you need to be prepared for the consequences.

Many website owners tend to neglect duplicate content on their website, Google’s search guidelines are strongly against duplicate content. Google views duplicate content as being intended to manipulate the search engine spiders which will result in a website being penalised. Google’s spiders may recognise your intentions of having a duplicate content. They have certain algorithms that are specifically do this job. It is best not to have any duplicate content in your website, as this may also cause confusion to your visitors.  Your optimisation activities may cause duplicate content in your website  due to the presence of old URLs  with the updated ones.  You may use 301 redirect, however there are circumstances that it may not work . One  example is when you are using CMS to manage your website and it does not allow you to use 301 redirect codes.  There are certain ways to have 301 redirect work on your website.

Another possible cause of a websites traffic drop may be due to links,  it is important to ensure all your websites inbound and external links are working properly, after you have updated or changed your website in any way.  You should also ensure that the architecture of your website is intact and the addresses you have changed are updated with  the search engines.

It is important to bear in mind that a slight drop in traffic is normal, especially within websites that have recently began its optimisation campaign. It will take some time for search engines to evaluate and analyse your website after making some changes or updates on it. This usually takes around two weeks for both Google and  Yahoo. A slight drop in traffic is normal and wont have a serious effect. However,  if in two weeks time when traffic rate is still low you just need to re-evaluate the situation.  Or better yet, seek professional advice from The UK  SEO Agency.
