What to focus on in 2010

Improving your online marketing should be top of your list of New Year resolutions and the first thing to do is recognise and identify where you can make the improvements. Once you know what parts need to be improved you can get started on setting goals and putting a plan into place. Search engine optimisation is massively important to a successful website and social networking has recently become such a dominant force that you should not ignore it. Email and mobiles can still be used and should not be forgotten about in the new era of technologies and here are a few ideas on what to focus on in 2010.

Social media is not easy to use as far as your return on investment (ROI) figures but it is possible to use it to your advantage. Take part in social media to ensure that you don’t get left behind and as well as this you will also be included in any news, updates and happenings that may affect your business. You should track your progress and keep referring back to your goals, which may include increasing the awareness of your brand with symbols and signatures, developing relationships with your customers, increase website traffic with recommendations and build up your customer base.

SEO should also be focused on and you should ensure that you focus on more than simply being noticed by the search engines. Getting ranked highly by the search engines is simply half of the goal, as you still need to ensure people are visiting and using your product/service even if you make to the first Google page. Make sure that your website matches up to your meta descriptions and title tags to ensure that you don’t annoy or disappoint your customers when they reach your site and it isn’t what they expected.

Email marketing should not be forgotten about simply because there are many new forms of communicating. It is not about to disappear in 2010 and increasing your email marketing efforts will still pay off; despite the introduction of social media. Use social media to increase your email listings by all means and take email to the next level by encouraging subscribers to forward your emails with via email or with social networking. The two can be used as a partnership rather than as enemies.

Many websites now enjoy mobile phone compatibility and if yours does not then you should use this year to change that. Optimise for all hand held devices and focus on B2C companies. Check that your pay per click (PPC) goals are actually being met and if they are look to improve them. Many people forget about checking in with their PPC as they are using so many other advertising schemes and marketing ideas to have the time to check on the PPC efforts and results so use 2010 to stay on top of what is going on within your business.

Canonical URL: How To Fix when using PHP

Filed under: SEO & PPC — Tags: — Nathan @ 10:45 pm

In my last article, I wrote about how to fix a canonical URL in apache, in todays article I am going to inform you how we can do this without the advantages of the apache environment but when we have php enablied.

This method is a little more long winded, as you are forced to use your website source code to detect the URL, and if applicable redirect the page to the new area. This is code we do not use as often as the apache based code, however in certain circumstances allows us to use it in other ways through adapting it slightly

The Code
<?

if(substr($_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'],0,4) != ‘www.’){
header(’Location: http://www.’.$_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'],true,301);
}

?>

How Does It Work?

It checks for the first 4 characters of the current website address ($_SERVER['HTTP_HOST']), and attempts to match them against the website address it should be (www.), if it does not match, it performs a header redirect whilst providing an override status code (301 in this case)

This code has one set of flaws though, it will only ever redirect to the home page of the website. It is possible to adjust it to show the current webpage, but this is well beyond the scope of this article which is to give you the potential options available to you.

How SEO can improve your marketing

Filed under: SEO & PPC — Tags: , , , , , — Nathan @ 10:27 pm

SEO is a modern form of marketing, as in todays marketplace - the majority of people will check online before they purchase a product, and can you guess where they will find your website? A advertising hoarding next to the motorway, the newspaper or Google?

The simple fact, 90% of people on the internet have heard of Google, and virtually 99% of the internets traffic goes through the major 3 search engines. It is when you take this information into account, and you realise in march 2006, 213 million searches were performed, Search Engine Marketing is a key marketing activity. However choosing the SEM method which best matches with your business is difficult, yet key choice.

Pay Per Click
Pay Per click is a great method of internet marketing, giving the illusion you are under complete control of your business and the traffic your website gets. The traffic you recieve is extremely well targetted, giving you a great chance of making a transaction. however it is solely focused on driving traffic for only the time you pay for it, as soon as your budget runs dry - your competitors are taking your potential sales.

Search Engine Optimisation

Search Engine Optimisation is another great method, its strenths are in the traffic figures being predictable, and once you are at the top of the listings your efforts can be diverted to defending those rankings. You can be certain that whilst you are at the top, your competitors will not beat you with the tick of a clock: instead having to out optimise your website. However SEO’s one big disadvantage is it takes time to get the listings, as your competitors will be defending them it can take time.

Which is best for me?

We often get asked this question, and in our opinion PPC is a great short term medium. You are always best investing in your website’s SEO for long term success.  I have seen many companies spending in excess of £30,000 per month, which in these economic times is a rediculous amount when a similar SEO campaign would cost just a tenth of the value, however may take 10 months to receive the listings. However in reality you could then cut the SEO budget considerably and still deliver the same traffic.
