What to focus on in 2010

February 1, 2010

Improving your online marketing should be top of your list of New Year resolutions and the first thing to do is recognise and identify where you can make the improvements. Once you know what parts need to be improved you can get started on setting goals and putting a plan into place. Search engine optimisation is massively important to a successful website and social networking has recently become such a dominant force that you should not ignore it. Email and mobiles can still be used and should not be forgotten about in the new era of technologies and here are a few ideas on what to focus on in 2010.

Social media is not easy to use as far as your return on investment (ROI) figures but it is possible to use it to your advantage. Take part in social media to ensure that you don’t get left behind and as well as this you will also be included in any news, updates and happenings that may affect your business. You should track your progress and keep referring back to your goals, which may include increasing the awareness of your brand with symbols and signatures, developing relationships with your customers, increase website traffic with recommendations and build up your customer base.

SEO should also be focused on and you should ensure that you focus on more than simply being noticed by the search engines. Getting ranked highly by the search engines is simply half of the goal, as you still need to ensure people are visiting and using your product/service even if you make to the first Google page. Make sure that your website matches up to your meta descriptions and title tags to ensure that you don’t annoy or disappoint your customers when they reach your site and it isn’t what they expected.

Email marketing should not be forgotten about simply because there are many new forms of communicating. It is not about to disappear in 2010 and increasing your email marketing efforts will still pay off; despite the introduction of social media. Use social media to increase your email listings by all means and take email to the next level by encouraging subscribers to forward your emails with via email or with social networking. The two can be used as a partnership rather than as enemies.

Many websites now enjoy mobile phone compatibility and if yours does not then you should use this year to change that. Optimise for all hand held devices and focus on B2C companies. Check that your pay per click (PPC) goals are actually being met and if they are look to improve them. Many people forget about checking in with their PPC as they are using so many other advertising schemes and marketing ideas to have the time to check on the PPC efforts and results so use 2010 to stay on top of what is going on within your business.

How to increase your blog traffic

January 25, 2010

Creating blogs is an art form in itself and it takes hard work and dedication to get a blogging website up and running. However, the hardest part of all is getting readership and then keeping them! Increasing your status in the world of blogging is hard work and it takes blood, sweat and tears but there are a few things that you can do to help you to increase your blog traffic.

One of the most common things I hear from people is that they are having problems increasing their blog readership and that they are putting hard work in but seeing very little results. This confidence bashing will sort out the men from the boys at an early stage and anyone lacking the patience and determination will bail out at this point but those in it for the long haul will be determined to work out where they are going wrong and fix the problem.

Firstly you should set aside a minimum of around two to three hours per day to concentrate on your blog posts. Once you have worked out where you can fit in your allotted time into your schedule you should begin by creating a brainstorm of blog ideas to work from. From your brainstorm, write at least one killer article a week that is really interesting and captivating to your audience and not just a space filler. It should be extremely valuable to your website and be long and structured rather than waffled opinions. Your ‘killer’ article should make people go ‘Wow, that was amazing and I am going to bookmark that address. Even better I am going to link to it from my Facebook account!’.This should take up around one hour a day.

Secondly you need to spend around 30 minutes a day on social networking with people in order to spread the word about your blogs. You should comment on other blogs that are similar to yours and provide links to the same bloggers from your blogs. Interact with the people who are creating these blogs and build up a relationship with them via Twitter, Facebook, IM or email. You want to aim to build relationships with these people so only do it with people whose work you admire and don’t puch too hard. If they are not interested in building a relationship with you then they will be of no use to you.

Thirdly you need to promote your blogs for around 30 minutes per day. This should include letting people in your networks know about it as well as other bloggers and webmasters who are in a similar niche, asking friends to Tweet it around Twitter, post and talk about the article on forums and newsgroups to literally spread the word. Lastly you need to remember to also post normal blogs and not rely only on a killer blog. These will build up your average base of site visitors and it is important to constantly dish out blogs that include the following:

1) Blogs that ask questions to your readers to gain interest

2) Blogs that highlight a new or secret trick you have recently discovered

3) Inform readers about the latest news or gossip in the niche you work within

How to create readable content that still serves its SEO purpose

November 14, 2009

When Search engine optimisation first came about it was all about throwing in random keywords and creating content that didn’t even need to be particularly readable. But as search engines evolved, so did their algorithms and nowadays although it is vital to still use keywords, they can be overworked.  Keyword use as far as SEO was concerned needed to only appeal to the search engines but we now need to make sure that it not only draws in the engines but also human readers so that they don’t find your website and get lumbered with articles that contain the same words every sentence.

There are some simple steps to take to ensure that your website content appeals to everyone, whether it be computer or human!

1) Headline

Ensure that the headline or title is appealing and catchy. You will have less than 10 seconds to catch the readers attention before they simply look elsewhere for whatever they want. In fact, most online users want everything done so fast that they have an attention span of that of a two year old! The trick is to lure them in with your headline before snaring them with your content.

2) Content topics

Choose topics that one of two things; appeal through its popularity or provoke with its edginess. Writing about topics that are current are a fool proof way to engage interest but it is also important to choose topics that may not have made headlines lately but they will cause somewhat of a stir in the online to community. This generates interest to your website but be careful not to choose provocative subjects that create too negative an impact on your site and there is a fine line between generating interest and simply scaring people away.

You must satisfy your readership by creating articles on general topics such as travel, money, health, celebrity gossip, technology, politics and films etc.

3) Simplify

Keep your writing simple to appeal to the masses. Dumb it down to a point but don’t go so far that it makes no sense or becomes dull to read. Don’t think of your readers as stupid simply think of them as being short of time and needing to get through what they are reading with as little trouble from complicated or long words as possible.

Getting to the point is also hugely beneficial to many readers so even if a topic could take up thousands of words, try and keep it to the point to grab the attention of the reader.

Lastly it is important to think about how you use the web and take into account what makes you use a website. What is it about certain headlines that draw you in and what is it about others that put you off? Brainstorming is a really helpful way to put your thoughts onto paper and it can be a great way to go back to your research into what works and what doesn’t later on.
