Improving Page Loading Speed

July 21, 2011

Having a fast page loading speed is essential for any website that wants to be as successful as possible. It’s also something that search engines are considering when ranking your site, so ensuring that your website has the best loading speeds possible is vital.

Another reason you should ensure your page loading speed is as fast as possible is to keep users happy. If a user has searched for your website and landed on your home page it is highly likely they’re truly interested in your website, however if they land on your home page and its taking a long time to load they’re probably going to lose interest and look elsewhere. Therefore a fast loading speed would ensure they stay on your site long enough to actually view your site properly.

There are many ways you can improve page speed, and although they might sound quite simple and irrelevant, they really do have a significant impact (most of the time!). A few examples of how you can improve page loading speed are:

  • Avoid using flash content unless absolutely necessary.
  • Minimise image sizes as smaller images will take less time to load.
  • Remove any unecessary HTML code.
  • Minimise the use of Javascript.

There are many tools available which can evaluate page loading speed and suggest ways you can improve the speed. An example of this is YSlow which is a free Firefox add on which can give you hints to improve the load speed of your page and improve your sites ranking on search engines.

Here at UK SEO Agency, we try our best to ensure your websites loading speed is as fast as possible therefore helping your page rankings and keeping your users satisfied. Geo-location

July 20, 2011

Filed under: Google — Becki @ 12:00 pm

Search engines determine a websites geo-location in two main ways – by the sites IP address or by the country code the domain name ends in. The geo-location of a website is used to determine which countrys search engine the site will appear and rank in.

In order for a website to rank in a certain country, their IP address must be located within that country or the domain name must end in that countrys code. For example if you want a site to appear and rank in a French search engine, the domain name must end in .fr. Localized search engines allow users to restrict their search results to websites within their own country, allowing users to get results local to them and therefore more specific to their searchs.

Google webmaster tools allows you to set target locations for your site, specific to countrys and to a precise location which will then show on Google maps. This will then allow your site to rank in that countrys search engines, increasing business for your company. If you have a generic domain (e.g. .com) you are also able to set different geo-locations for different sub domains with country codes you own, allowing your business to expand and appear in multiple countries.

If you would like your business to be expanded and your site to appear in other countries, why not contact us here at UK SEO Agency by filling out our enquiry form and we’d be happy to get in contact with you and discuss the options available to you. Short and Long Tail Searches

July 19, 2011

Filed under: Google — Becki @ 9:03 am

Searches in Google can be split into two categories, Short tail and Long tail keyword searches, or broad and narrow keyword searches.

Short tail searches are generic search terms that produce a wide range of results, but are much less precise than long tail searches. These searches are far more common and produce much more results than long tail searches, however users will find it difficult to find exactly what theyre looking for with a short tail search.

Long tail searches are a more precise search term that users input to Google in order to produce more specific results and find what they’re looking for easier. An example of a short tail search would be ‘web design’ whereas the long tail search would be ‘web design in chester’. The first search would have much more results than the second, however users who know where they want to find a web designer would benefit more from using the long tail search.

Long tail searches are beneficial for businesses as user who enter more precise keywords will be more interested in what they’re searching for and would appreciate being taken to a site which directly links to their search. If a website has incorporated long tail keywords within their website then their site will be marketing to customers who know what they’re after and want better results, therefore gaining valuble users for their site.

Here at UK SEO Agency, we ensure that we incorporate long tail keywords specific to the business within the site in order to help your site be easier to find to potential users who want exact results from a search. This will benefit your business as valuble users could be gained, simply by ensuring your site appears in relevant long tail searches.
