How to create readable content that still serves its SEO purpose

Filed under: Blogging, Business Articles, Our Services, SEO — Tags: , , — Katie @ 11:23 pm

When Search engine optimisation first came about it was all about throwing in random keywords and creating content that didn’t even need to be particularly readable. But as search engines evolved, so did their algorithms and nowadays although it is vital to still use keywords, they can be overworked.  Keyword use as far as SEO was concerned needed to only appeal to the search engines but we now need to make sure that it not only draws in the engines but also human readers so that they don’t find your website and get lumbered with articles that contain the same words every sentence.

There are some simple steps to take to ensure that your website content appeals to everyone, whether it be computer or human!

1) Headline

Ensure that the headline or title is appealing and catchy. You will have less than 10 seconds to catch the readers attention before they simply look elsewhere for whatever they want. In fact, most online users want everything done so fast that they have an attention span of that of a two year old! The trick is to lure them in with your headline before snaring them with your content.

2) Content topics

Choose topics that one of two things; appeal through its popularity or provoke with its edginess. Writing about topics that are current are a fool proof way to engage interest but it is also important to choose topics that may not have made headlines lately but they will cause somewhat of a stir in the online to community. This generates interest to your website but be careful not to choose provocative subjects that create too negative an impact on your site and there is a fine line between generating interest and simply scaring people away.

You must satisfy your readership by creating articles on general topics such as travel, money, health, celebrity gossip, technology, politics and films etc.

3) Simplify

Keep your writing simple to appeal to the masses. Dumb it down to a point but don’t go so far that it makes no sense or becomes dull to read. Don’t think of your readers as stupid simply think of them as being short of time and needing to get through what they are reading with as little trouble from complicated or long words as possible.

Getting to the point is also hugely beneficial to many readers so even if a topic could take up thousands of words, try and keep it to the point to grab the attention of the reader.

Lastly it is important to think about how you use the web and take into account what makes you use a website. What is it about certain headlines that draw you in and what is it about others that put you off? Brainstorming is a really helpful way to put your thoughts onto paper and it can be a great way to go back to your research into what works and what doesn’t later on.

Turnover is Vanity: Profit is Sanity

In the age old wold of business, it is a common quote “Turnover is vanity: profit is Sanity”, but what does this mean in an internet marketing world? I have worked with many companies, who are purely looking to increase turnover as they believe this will make them a higher profit! However in all honest this just makes them busy fools. A lot of internt marketing companies refuse to accept what the key factor in any clients business, profitability!

Having worked with these clients, they often take there eye of the key figures! this then makes them very panicky as when they look at the bank balance at the end of the month - its worse off yet still having taken more money! But what can you do to increase turnover whilst controlling costs, and either maintaining your profit or increasing it. So here are a couple of tips to help you increase your profitability, and company stability within the recession

  • Agree Longer terms contracts for a pricing discount: If you are on a rolling contract, you are in a good position to improve the pricing they give you - by signing up for a 12 month period. Your supplier is happy because they are guaranteed your business for 12 months, albeit at a lower margin, and you have saved yourself a considerable amount of your cost
  • Use your marketing budget more effectively: when you was just starting out, you realised every single pound you spent on marketing had to give you a specified return to sustain your business. Unfortunately as business’s grow, they tend to have a marketing squish they can spend, this may be anything from £50 to £50,000+. If you reduce these outgoings, you increase your profitability. You can do this in a number of ways, one of the ways is to reduce your pay per click advertising spend, removing words which are not working for you - or simply changing the advert texts/landing page to increase your chance of click through and conversion.
  • Change Cutoff Times: If you are in an industry which requires postage, if you have a order cutoff of 2:30 for a dispatch the same day - then you must realise anyone visiting your site may look for a competitior - however if you can push that back to 3:30 - thats an extra incentive for them to convert! What is key to realise is the push the cutoff as late as you can, this will bring down your overall cost per conversion, ensuring each order gives you a profit
