When Search engine optimisation first came about it was all about throwing in random keywords and creating content that didn’t even need to be particularly readable. But as search engines evolved, so did their algorithms and nowadays although it is vital to still use keywords, they can be overworked. Keyword use as far as SEO was concerned needed to only appeal to the search engines but we now need to make sure that it not only draws in the engines but also human readers so that they don’t find your website and get lumbered with articles that contain the same words every sentence.
There are some simple steps to take to ensure that your website content appeals to everyone, whether it be computer or human!
1) Headline
Ensure that the headline or title is appealing and catchy. You will have less than 10 seconds to catch the readers attention before they simply look elsewhere for whatever they want. In fact, most online users want everything done so fast that they have an attention span of that of a two year old! The trick is to lure them in with your headline before snaring them with your content.
2) Content topics
Choose topics that one of two things; appeal through its popularity or provoke with its edginess. Writing about topics that are current are a fool proof way to engage interest but it is also important to choose topics that may not have made headlines lately but they will cause somewhat of a stir in the online to community. This generates interest to your website but be careful not to choose provocative subjects that create too negative an impact on your site and there is a fine line between generating interest and simply scaring people away.
You must satisfy your readership by creating articles on general topics such as travel, money, health, celebrity gossip, technology, politics and films etc.
3) Simplify
Keep your writing simple to appeal to the masses. Dumb it down to a point but don’t go so far that it makes no sense or becomes dull to read. Don’t think of your readers as stupid simply think of them as being short of time and needing to get through what they are reading with as little trouble from complicated or long words as possible.
Getting to the point is also hugely beneficial to many readers so even if a topic could take up thousands of words, try and keep it to the point to grab the attention of the reader.
Lastly it is important to think about how you use the web and take into account what makes you use a website. What is it about certain headlines that draw you in and what is it about others that put you off? Brainstorming is a really helpful way to put your thoughts onto paper and it can be a great way to go back to your research into what works and what doesn’t later on.
