A few misconceptions about the ease of selling a blog…

February 7, 2010

Selling blogs for money in order to make a career out of it is not as easy as everyone seems to think it is. New bloggers come and go like yo-yo’s and very few actually make it from determined new blogger to successful blogger with a readership never mind make a career out of it. The internet boasts many rags to overnight riches stories, which are partly to blame for the misconceptions about how easy it is to apply good and meaningful SEO and blogs. Trust me as someone who has been specialising in SEO skills as well as designing websites and creating thousands of blog posts; these stories are few and far between and the majority of people fall flat within the first few months.

As well as the misconception that you can easily become a millionaire online overnight, another popular myth is that unique content, GooglePageRank and numerous backlinks will increase the money that your site is worth from pennies to pounds. It is true that these are desired parts of a good website but these inclusions alone will not affect the price or worth of a website as revenue and traffic are far more vital to a potential buyer. If someone wants to buy your website that boasts good revenue and site traffic without backlinks then they will but if you have loads of backlinks but no revenue or traffic, how do you expect to make money?

A better way to show you what I mean is to provide you with an example. Take two blogs, namely blog 1 and blog 2. Blog 1 enjoys the addition of a handful of backlinks, gets 5,000 visitors a month and has a PR4 yet makes no revenue. Blog 2 has a PR2, receives the same or slightly fewer visitors but it uses Google AdSense and makes 300 GBP per month. While blogs 2′s page rank may be lower it earns money and anyone looking to but a website will buy one that makes money rather than one that ranks highly.

There are also many myths about how you should sell a website. There are a few internet resources at hand here with Flippa.com proving the most usable. The best ones will require that you pay a fee, but it will be worth it as you will be on the listings available to thousands if not millions of potential website buyers. Ignore all the people that say you can sell your website via a free advertising space as for a fee as little as about 25 GBP you can sell it quicker and for more.

Selling a website can be a great way to make money and there is no doubt about it that the internet can be a lucrative place to be. However, how easy it is to do is shrouded with absolute BS and making money online can only be done by those educated and patient enough to learn how to do it properly. Here at the UK SEO Agency we can help you to achieve your goals with a wide offering of services to help you to improve your online presence.

Making millions overnight is basically as likely as winning the lottery…

How to use email to your full advantage

February 6, 2010

There was a day, long before the introduction of the internet, when sending letters, making phone calls and communicating by post was the only way to communicate with your clients. Nowadays, the technological advancements have meant that phone conversations barely exist and sending a letter is as unheard of as it would be unreliable with Royal Mail. Email is now the only way to communicate as we use electronic mail to talk to other internet users, customers, potential customers, bloggers, advertising and networking.

Facebook and Twitter allow us to communicate but in the form of blogging rather than informative emails and while social networking certainly has lots benefits; email has many, many more. It is universally accepted as a means of communication with everyone from the rich to the poor and the young to the old using email as a standard way to communicate.

The problem with emails is that not enough people pay enough attention to what they are writing in their emails as they have become such a natural part of everyday life. I want to share with you a few tips you should take note of next time your write an email to ensure your email etiquette has not been lost…

Forget all the babble at the start and end of your email and keep to direct and to the point. That way you will not waste your time with meaningless chitchat and vice versa for the recipient. Chances are they will have dozens of emails to go through and if yours is full of pleasantries, you may irritate them as well as complicate the purpose of the email. I am not saying be rude you must ensure you say hello as well as sign off pleasantly but you needn’t talk about what you did over the weekend; leave that for a Skype conversation.

Make sure you fill in the subject bar. If the subject is urgent write that in first followed by a brief on what it is about. Include the main part of the focus of the email here so that the reader has an idea of what the email is about before opening it. Create a few templates that can be used for regularly answered emails. i.e. if you are an editor and receive numerous pieces of work every day create a template that reads something simple like: “Received, with thanks” and your signature on the bottom. This saves you time and the writer will know you got the work on time.

Make sure you reply to the appropriate message thread. If someone emails you two emails then ensure you send the right reply to the right email as well as making sure that the title is still relevant if the email has gone back and forth a few times. If the subject changes then change the title.

How your blogs can be improved…

February 4, 2010

Search engine optimisation – Improve your blogging techniques by avoiding the common potholes.

If you are constantly creating blogs and rarely seeing any site visitors then you are doing something wrong. There are millions of blogs out there and the majority of them are growing dust as we speak and normally for the same reasons. If you are unaware of why your blog is not gaining a readership let me put it simply for you; it sucks! The majority of blogs really do, they are dull, unimaginative and simply boring, which means no one in their right mind would want to read it.

The most common problem is that your blog is boring. Write about subjects that interest your readers to gain readers and make sure you entertain, educate and engage your readers, otherwise they will simply log out never to be seen again. Your blogs should always be unique, even if they follow the same subject as other blogs (which would be nigh on impossible to avoid) your blog should read differently.

At all costs avoid using music in the background of your blog as everyone’s tastes differ so half the people who log in will log straight back out if they hear sounds they don’t like and the rest will by annoyed that music just blared out of their computer in the office while they are supposed to be working. Music is also distracting when you are trying to read…

Try not to talk about yourself too much. There is nothing more generic than reading about people’s tastes and experiences so get over yourself and talk about something interesting. Many blogs are not set out into categories so people visiting your blog site will be unable to search for a topic that interests them and instead they will get irritated if they have to scroll though numerous pages of uninteresting blogs before possibly finding one they want to read. By that point, many people would have simply left to find a site with categories and even the simplest platforms allow you to put your blogs into different categories.

To many blogs are also full of punctuation mistakes and spelling atrocities, which makes them hard to read and quite frankly irritating. Typos speak volumes about your blog and they scream that you don’t care about what you have written and if you don’t care, why would your readers? Find a niche and get into it instead of randomly babbling about everything and anything and above all else, ensure that you post regularly and continuously. If your readers expect a new post on a Tuesday make sure there is a post on a Tuesday.
